The BJP’s campaign in the Haryana elections started with multiple types of insurgency. Therefore, it is very important for the party to present a strong front and emerge victorious in this Haryana Assembly election. Political analysts say that the BJP’s defeat may have an impact on other states as well, as state elections are not a tight contest for the BJP, and it may have far-reaching consequences.

Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, PM Modi’s biographer and an expert on Hindu nationalist politics, said: “The Haryana elections are the first chance for the BJP to reverse its defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.” This means it could be a path to a comeback and have a better impact in Maharashtra, Jharkhand and then Delhi elections. Political analysts believe that the BJP faces three major challenges in the Haryana elections.

Farmers’ anger

The first is the farmers’ movement or the anger of farmers. The BJP, which was in power in Haryana, never allowed farmers to cross the Singhu border, which was the epicentre of the farmers’ protest between Haryana and Delhi. The state government, Haryana police, took several steps to ensure that the protests did not spread to Delhi so that the unrest did not spread in the national capital and the ruling party at the Centre did not have to face embarrassment.

Wrestlers protest

“The sports, especially wrestling ecosystem is a big challenge,” said Mukhopadhyay. The wrestlers’ show is led by Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia. Both have recently joined the Congress party. This is important because wrestling is big in Haryana. There is hardly a village without an akhara. The BJP may have a hard time convincing the young boys and girls who see these wrestlers as idols.

Agnivil Yojana

He said: “The third and biggest challenge is the Agniveer Yojana. On one hand, there are ex-servicemen and interested youths who want to join the armed forces. People here have not taken up the Agniveer scheme. Although the government is trying to provide paramilitary and government jobs, it is not enough.

Leadership Changes

Another important reason why the BJP wants to win Haryana is that the BJP has made a major leadership change in Haryana. He appointed Naib Singh Saini to succeed Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar as the chief. As chief minister, he was a relatively unpopular face but had the ability to draw the associated Saini caste community into his arms. It is important for the BJP to prove this right as the Sangh may lose faith in the BJP as a result. A win here can also boost the morale of Delhi workers. A political defeat in Haryana could mean that the bad days for the BJP will continue.

Gurgaon may slip away from you

A senior BJP leader also said he was confident of the development work done in the state. But in order to maintain this development, someone needs to remain in power. However, this time, the BJP does not want to rely on the support of parties such as the BJP to form a government, but hopes to win with an absolute majority.

If the BJP loses in Haryana, it could also lose the fast-growing commercial city of Gurgaon. This would be a huge loss as Gurgaon alone generated Rs 2,600 crore in excise revenue in 2022-23, according to recent estimates. About 45-48% of Haryana’s revenue comes from Gurgaon, including excise duty, sales tax, stamp duty and registration tax.

Compare that to Noida, which generated Rs 1,975 crore in 2023-24. In the last elections, the BJP lost key business hubs — Delhi, Hyderabad in Telangana, Bengaluru in Karnataka. The opposition Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress were in power in all these places.
