Farmers refuse to talk to Shambhu Border Commission, says Supreme Court – Court doors always open to welcome any demand

Peasant Movement and the Supreme Court.

During the Supreme Court hearing in the farmers’ protest case at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana, farmers refused to talk to the committee constituted by the court. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court said during the hearing on Wednesday that the doors of the court are always open to entertain any suggestions/demands made by farmers either directly or through their authorized representatives.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuiyan was hearing the case on Wednesday. A day earlier, the court had asked the high commission to convince farmers to temporarily shift or suspend their protests.

During the hearing, Justice Surya Kant asked what happened after we issued the order? Punjab Attorney General Gurminder Singh said that after your order, we held detailed discussions with Dallewal (the farmer leader who went on a hunger strike to death) but he refused to undergo a medical examination. Every part of his body is in good shape.

Justice Kant said there may be differences with the government but their agitation must be healthy. As an elected government and a constitutional body, you don’t want to blame them for what happened.

Farmers refuse to speak to committee

The Supreme Court said in its order that Dhalewal had been fasting for more than 20 days. Discussions have been held with him and efforts are being made to ensure he receives the immediate medical care he needs, the statement said. During the negotiations, the farmers refused to negotiate with the committee constituted by the court.

He said the Attorney General of Punjab had suggested that farmers should be allowed to approach the courts directly. We clarify that the doors of the Court are always open to accept any suggestions/requests made by farmers either directly or through their authorized representatives.

Farmers’ movement hearing to be held again on Thursday

The court said that as far as Dhalewal’s health condition is concerned, the state government will ensure immediate medical assistance as per the advice of doctors.

Look at the gravity of the consequences, Justice Kant said. The entire state apparatus would be blamed. Farmers should not be subject to peer pressure. The Supreme Court will hear the case further on Thursday at 2 pm.
