Elon Musk’s satellite internet service Starlink in India and Amazon Network’s satellite service may be delayed in launching. The Ministry of Telecommunications has made big demands on the two companies. Recently, the government sought suggestions from stakeholders on spectrum allocation, pricing, etc. for satellite internet services. The government will soon start the process of allocating spectrum to service providers.
DoT made this request
The US Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked for speedy completion of security-related compliance regarding Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon satellite services. The Telecom Ministry has approved Airtel’s Eutelsat Oneweb and Jio’s SES satellite internet services. The transport ministry has asked both companies to submit documents related to necessary safety parameters to move forward with the application process.
According to ET, the two companies have not yet submitted information related to safety compliance. The Ministry of Telecommunications has written to both companies. An official related to the matter said that after waiting a few days, the government will issue a reminder. Only if these companies accept all security-related conditions will their applications be processed further.
Document sharing instructions
Many areas of the country are very sensitive from a security perspective, the official said. In this case, satellite companies will have to share documents related to data, coverage, etc. with the government. Only after this will the government allow these companies to start their services in India. Elon Musk has applied for a Global Mobile Personal Communications Satellite Service (GMPCS) license in October 2022. Amazon submitted its application last year.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) is currently collecting feedback from other stakeholders on pricing and other conditions for spectrum for satellite internet services. In India, Airtel, Jio and Vodafone-Idea will provide terrestrial mobile services as well as satellite services. At the same time, Amazon and Starlink will also become their main competitors in the field of satellite services.
