Mayor orders moratorium, but LG reverses decision

At a press conference on Friday, senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia and MCD Mayor Shaili Oberoi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Municipal Corporation Commissioner of mocking Democracy and the Constitution. Sisodia claimed that the commissioner issued an order late Thursday night directing the additional commissioner to conduct the election as the presiding officer. “The BJP was caught red-handed trying to repeat the Chandigarh mayoral election,” he said, adding that as per the rules, only the mayor, deputy mayor or mayor can vote. Senior MPs can preside over meetings of the MCD House. The mayor has announced that the next House meeting and standing committee elections will be held on October 5.

Sisodia further claimed that the order issued by the Commissioner on the instructions of the Lieutenant Governor was “illegal”. Mayor Shali Oberoi said she has announced the next House meeting on October 5 as well as the election of the sixth standing committee member and is committed to ensuring free and fair elections. He insisted the commissioner’s order was “unconstitutional, invalid and illegal.” Oberoi reiterated that the elections will be held on October 5.

Former CM Arvind Kejriwal said on the MCD standing committee elections, “I am surprised. The MCD House can be convened only by the mayor. The Lieutenant Governor cannot convene the House. Tomorrow they will say that the Home Secretary will convene the Assembly session. Their intention is flawed.” On the other hand, AAP MLA Dilip Pandey also raised the issue of MCD standing committee election in the Delhi Assembly. “LG does not respect the constitution. It is murder of democracy and the constitution by trying to force elections in the MCD,” he said.

AAP leader Manish Sisodia claimed that the BJP is stifling democracy on the instructions of Prime Minister Modi. “The MCD Commissioner ordered the conduct of elections on the instructions of the LG, which is illegal and unconstitutional,” he said. MCD Mayor Shaili Oberoi and AAP clarified that the elections held on September 27 were “illegal” and the elections would only be held on 10 Held on May 5th.
