Ed Davey struggles with his timing as he takes part in a Zumba class… just hours after screaming ‘vote Liberal Democrat’ while hurtling towards the ground on a bungee rope in latest extreme campaign stunt

Sir Ed Davey might have been full of enthusiasm as he took part in Zumba while on the campaign trail today – but he appeared to struggle badly with his timing.

The Liberal Democrat leader donned a T-shirt and shorts as he moved his feet and swung his hips to the music after joining a fitness class in Berkshire.

Yet he seemed to be a beat or two behind the instructor during the Latin-inspired dance workout.

Sir Ed’s lack of timing might have been explained by the fact his Zumba class came just hours after he had plunged to the ground while bungee jumping in Eastbourne.

As he dangled from a rope while performing his most daredevil campaign stunt yet, the 58-year-old screamed ahead of Thursday’s general election: ‘Vote Liberal Democrat!’

Having spent the past five-and-a-half weeks taking part in a series of hair-raising acts, Sir Ed left his biggest challenge for the last week of the election campaign.

The Lib Dem leader undertook a bungee jump on the East Sussex coast this morning as he urged voters to take a ‘leap of faith’ and back his party in three day’s time.

‘A lot of people are on the cusp of doing something they’ve never done before on Thursday and voting for the Liberal Democrats,’ the ex-Cabinet minister said.

‘So I decided to do something I’ve never done before too.’

Ahead of polling day, Sir Ed has previously been on a water slide, a rollercoaster, and fallen off a paddleboard on Lake Windermere.

He has also completed both land-based and water-based assault courses in a string of eye-catching events.

Sir Ed has admitted his non-traditional approach to campaigning is a bid to get voters’ attention.

‘We can marry having a bit of fun with some serious messages,’ he said last month.

‘When I fell off a paddleboard in Lake Windermere, yeah everyone thought it was a laugh, but actually it was making a serious point about sewage.

‘If you do it the traditional way, you make a speech at a lectern, you might get a tiny bit of coverage but people aren’t that engaged with it.

‘I think that by taking a slightly different approach – with a bit of humor, a bit of emotion — you can get people’s attention.’

The Lib Dems won 11 seats in the House of Commons at the 2019 general election, but are hopeful of a significantly improved result on 4 July.

They are eyeing a number of constituencies in the ‘Blue Wall’ as voters turn away from the Conservatives in their traditional heartlands in southern England.

A recent Survation mega-poll showed the Lib Dems could be on course to win 56 seats on Thursday and replace the SNP as the third largest party in the Commons.

After completing his bungee jump this morning, Sir Ed said: ‘To get the change our country needs this week and beat the Conservatives in scores of seats, I am asking people to take a leap of faith and vote for the Liberal Democrats.

‘A lot of people are on the cusp of doing something they’ve never done before on Thursday and voting for the Liberal Democrats, so I decided to do something I’ve never done before too.

‘Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to fix the NHS and care, end the sewage scandal and tackle the cost of living crisis.’
