Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Poonch area of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday morning. According to the information, this earthquake occurred at around 6.45 in the morning. The tremors of the earthquake were so strong that people woke up. People came out of their homes. However, there is no news of any loss of life or property. Its depth is said to be 5 km.

Why do earthquakes occur?

To understand it scientifically, we have to understand the structure of the Earth. The Earth is situated on tectonic plates. Below it there is liquid lava and tectonic plates float on it. Many times these plates collide with each other. Due to repeated collisions, sometimes the corners of the plates bend and when there is too much pressure, these plates start breaking. In such a situation, the energy coming from below finds a way out. When this creates a disturbance, an earthquake occurs.

How is intensity measured?

Earthquakes are measured on the Richter scale. Richter scale is a mathematical scale to measure the intensity of earthquake waves, it is called Richter Magnitude Test Scale. On the Richter scale, earthquakes are measured from 1 to 9 from its center i.e. epicenter. This scale measures intensity based on the energy released from within the earth during an earthquake.

Know what could be the impact according to the intensity of earthquake on Richter scale:
– An earthquake on the Richter scale of 0 to 1.9 can be detected only through a seismograph.
– Mild tremors occur when an earthquake occurs on the Richter scale of 2 to 2.9.
– When an earthquake of 3 to 3.9 Richter scale occurs, it has the effect of a truck passing near you.
– Windows can break if an earthquake occurs on the 4 to 4.9 Richter scale. Frames hanging on walls may fall.
– Furniture can shake when an earthquake occurs on the 5 to 5.9 Richter scale.
– The foundation of buildings can crack when an earthquake occurs on the 6 to 6.9 Richter scale. There may be damage to the upper floors.
