Drunk civic volunteer collided with divider near protest site, police arrested him and removed him from service

A civic volunteer has been arrested near Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The volunteer hit a divider with his bike at 3.45 am on Saturday. The incident took place when students of Rabindra Bharati University were protesting against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The protesters allege that the civic volunteer, identified as Gangasagar Ghosh, was drunk and had a Kolkata Police sticker on his bike.

After the incident, the student protesters immediately stopped Gangasagar Ghosh and handed him over to the on-duty traffic officer Tarakeswar Puri. However, the protesters allege that the traffic sergeant helped the civic volunteer escape from the spot after seeing a large crowd gathering. After the incident, the students staged a sit-in against the police and demanded immediate action against the civic volunteer and the traffic policeman. Later, based on the complaint filed by the students, the Kolkata Police arrested the accused civic volunteer. A departmental inquiry has been initiated against the traffic sergeant, while the civic volunteer has been removed from service.

It is noteworthy that Kolkata Police employs civic volunteers to assist the police in traffic management and during festivals and awareness campaigns.
This incident has come to light at a time when protests are going on over the rape and murder of a doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The body of this 31-year-old doctor was found in the seminar hall of the hospital on 9 August.

A civic volunteer of the Kolkata Police, Sanjoy Roy, was arrested the next day in connection with the incident. The police found a Bluetooth device near the crime scene and CCTV footage showed him near the seminar hall on the third floor of the hospital, based on which the arrest was made.
