DRDO-IIT Delhi jointly create lightweight bulletproof jacket ‘ABHED’

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in collaboration with researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, has developed a lightweight bulletproof jacket named ‘ABHED – Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defense’. The jacket has been designed by DRDO’s Center of Industrial Academic Excellence (DIA-CoE) at IIT Delhi.

ABHED lightweight bulletproof jacket

The sheath is made of polymer and native boron carbide ceramic materials. The design allows it to withstand any type of high-velocity pressure. The jacket’s armor plates have passed all necessary research and development tests in accordance with the protocol. This jacket can withstand most hazards.

ABHED lightweight bulletproof jacket

Lighter than the maximum weight limit required by the Indian Army. These modularly designed jackets feature front and rear armor for 360-degree protection and are available in minimum weights of 8.2kg and 9.5kg for different BIS levels. Will be produced soon. A number of industries were selected for this purpose.

Dr. Sameer V. Kamat, Chairman, DRDO, said that the lightweight bulletproof jacket is an excellent example of the defense R&D ecosystem of DRDO, academia and industry.
