Electricity is a basic need for every household today. Without electricity, even a few hours can be difficult to get through. Most appliances like refrigerators, coolers, heaters, fans, water pumps run on electricity. So without electricity, sometimes it’s like life stops. Having electricity brings us comfort, but electricity bills have also troubled us many times. The more appliances we use, the higher our electricity bills become. However, sometimes we use less electricity but our electricity bills are high.
Let us tell you that electricity rates vary in different parts of India. The price of electricity in some places is Rs 7 per kilowatt hour, while in other places it is Rs 8 or 9 per kilowatt hour. If you consume more power, then you will have to pay high charges. In order to correctly read the amount of electricity, the power department installed electricity meters in various places. Electricity meters cannot be tampered with in any way, so they are very reliable and give correct readings.
However, many times there is a situation where the electricity consumption is low but the electricity bill is very high. This happens because the meter is running very fast. If you think your electricity bill is high as shown on your meter, then you can have it checked. While you can request an investigation by complaining to the electricity department, you can also investigate on your own before doing so.
How to check whether the electric meter is running fast
- To check your electric meter, first turn off all appliances in your home.
- Afterwards, note down the initial reading of the meter.
- Now, turn on an appliance such as a 1,000-watt lamp or heater for one hour.
- Now write down the last reading of the meter one hour later.
- If the readings differ by one unit, which is 1 kWh, the meter is working properly.
- If the reading gets higher, the meter gets faster; if the reading gets lower, the meter gets slower.
- Pay special attention to the time when reading the meter. Always take meter readings at the same time, this will ensure an accurate comparison.
However, you must remember that this is not a completely correct method of instrument testing. Through this process, you can estimate whether the meter is working properly. In addition, you can also contact the nearby power department to check whether the meter is normal. You can request verification from your electric company. You may have to pay a fee to have the electrical department investigate.
