Doctor rape and murder case: Sandeep Ghosh and SHO Abhijeet Mandal in CBI custody for 3 days

Sandeep Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, and Abhijeet Mandal, in-charge of Tala police station, have been remanded in three-day CBI custody. The two were arrested on Saturday in the rape and murder case of a female doctor. Today, the three appeared before a special CBI court and filed a request for custody of the accused, which the court accepted. Now on September 17, both the accused will appear before the court.

Abhijeet Mandal, in-charge of Tala police station, has been arrested for tampering with evidence, delay in filing FIR and other charges, a CBI official said. The officer was detained on Saturday after he failed to give satisfactory answers during questioning by CBI officials. The CBI arrested Sandeep Ghosh on September 2 in the hospital financial irregularities case.

The CBI lawyer said, “We feel there is a big conspiracy behind this crime.” The Tara police station received information about the incident at 10 am, but the police reached the spot at 11 am. The FIR was registered after 11:30 pm. The OC of the police station had several conversations with Sandeep Ghosh that day. There was a deep relationship between them. There is no dispute between the police and the CBI. Information about the incident is being obtained by questioning the OC.

Abhijit Mandal’s lawyer told the court: “The portion against my client is bailable. There are allegations against him like delay in filing FIR on the spot. The department can investigate him in this regard but cannot arrest him for this mistake. Whenever CBI called him after issuing notice, he fully cooperated. My client was hospitalized but he reappeared.

Earlier, the CBI questioned four junior doctors including Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the case. Meanwhile, Abhishek Gupta, deputy commissioner of Kolkata Police (North) and Vidit Raj Bhundesh, deputy commissioner of the detective department (DD), were also questioned. A police officer said, “We want to know on what basis the police are investigating this case. What is their process?”

Apart from this, information about the events that took place that night has also come from the roles of the main accused and four other junior doctors. These four doctors were in the victim’s presence that night. They had dinner together. The CBI is currently investigating two cases simultaneously related to the Kolkata incident. The first case is about the rape and murder of a woman doctor, while the second case is related to corruption at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Let us tell you that Dr. Akhtar Ali, former vice-chancellor of RG Kar Medical College, has filed a complaint against Sandeep Ghosh for financial irregularities in the college. These include allegations of smuggling of bodies in the hospital, corruption in bio-medical waste, nepotism in construction tenders, etc. On August 19, a case was registered against him under Sections 120B, 420 of the IPC and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
