Abhijeet Mandal, the in-charge of Tala police station, who was arrested in connection with the rape-murder case of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has been suspended on Wednesday. This is the first major action taken by the new Kolkata CP Manoj Verma after he assumed charge. Abhijeet Mandal is currently in CBI custody. He is being interrogated continuously.

A police officer said Abhijeet Mandal has been suspended under the West Bengal government service rules. According to the rules, if a government official is detained under any law for more than 48 hours, he will be suspended. Abhijeet Mandal was arrested by the CBI on September 14.

On Tuesday, the CBI extended the custody of Dr Sandeep Ghosh, former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mandal, in-charge of Tala police station, for three days. The CBI told the court that both were not cooperating with the investigation. The investigating agency also said that no evidence of gang rape with the woman doctor has been found so far.

The CBI lawyer said their officials have not found any evidence to prove the direct involvement of Sandeep Ghosh and Abhijit Mandal in the rape or murder of the doctor. The two had spoken to each other several times on the day when the doctor’s body was fished out. From the call details between the two, the CBI came to know that they had called certain numbers several times.
