Professor Mazhar Asif takes over as Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI), one of the country’s renowned universities. He has become the 16th Vice-Chancellor of Jamia. President Draupadi Murmu on Thursday appointed Mazhar Asif as the vice-chancellor of the madrasa, according to federal education ministry officials. Najma Akhtar was appointed as VC long after her term ends in November 2023.

Who is Professor Mazhar Asif?
Professor Mazhar Asif is currently a professor at the School of Languages, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Professor Asif of Jinan University is a member of the 2020 New National Education Policy Drafting Committee. He served as a member of the executive committee of Jawaharlal Nehru University and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad National Urdu University.

He also played a leadership role in national education initiatives such as the National Institute of Open Schools and the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language. He has published nine books in Persian, English and Assamese, including a comprehensive Persian-Assamese-English dictionary. He has published more than 20 research papers in national and international conferences, demonstrating his active participation in academic discussions.

Reached “Lion of Nowshera” after serving as a VC
Professor Mazhar Asif was given a warm welcome by the teaching and non-teaching staff of the university at the VC Office Park on Thursday. After joining the army, he immediately went to pay his respects to Brigadier General Usman’s mausoleum on the university campus. He was the first Vice-Chancellor in Jamia to lay a wreath at the grave of Brigadier Usman immediately after assuming office. Brigadier General Usman, also known as the “Lion of Nowshera”, was a senior officer of the Indian Army who was killed in action during the 1947-48 Indo-Pak war.

Prof. Mazhar Asif paid tribute to Dr. Zakir Hussain, former President of India, and MA, a founding member of JMI, by laying flowers at Ansari’s mausoleum on the university campus.

Speaking here at the conference hall of the Vice-Chancellor’s office, he said there is only one motto and one goal, and that is how to take this university to the highest position. He emphasizes that he is a student- and employee-centered person. He said: “It is our responsibility to provide good life, food and safety to the students of the school.
