The controversy that started over director Anubhav Sinha’s Netflix series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ is only growing. This web series, which was released on August 29, received a lot of praise on one hand, but on the other hand, a controversy erupted over the names of the terrorists shown in the show as ‘Bhola’ and ‘Shankar’.

People started demanding a ban on ‘IC 814’ and the hashtag ‘boycott’ also came out again on social media. But this matter has now become legal and a petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court demanding a ban on the show.

Demand for ban on ‘IC 814’ reached the court
According to the information, a petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court demanding a ban on the series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ on the OTT platform Netflix. The petition has requested to cancel the certificate allowing the screening of the series and to immediately ban this film.

The petition alleges that in this series the real identity of the terrorists involved in the kidnapping has been presented under wrong names.

According to the petition, in this Netflix series, the real identity of the terrorists involved in the hijacking of Air India flight IC 814 from Kandahar to Delhi in 1999 has been presented in a hidden manner. Whereas the real identity of the terrorists, which is public, should be shown as it is.

What is the controversy?
In the show ‘IC 814’, the hijackers are seen using code names instead of their real names during the entire incident. These names are – Burger, Chief, Shankar and Bhola. People on social media are alleging that this is an attempt to hide the real names of the terrorists. The show and director Anubhav Sinha are being opposed for this, people are also posting with the hashtag boycott Netflix-Bollywood.

However, the release from the Indian Foreign Ministry itself states that for the passengers on board the hijacked aircraft, the hijackers had given themselves codenames – Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola and Shankar. They used these names to call each other during the hijacking.

The controversy over ‘IC 814’ is increasing and recently there was news that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India has summoned the content head of Netflix in Delhi. Official sources said that the ministry has summoned the content head of Netflix India on Tuesday and has sought clarification from him on the alleged controversial aspects of ‘IC 814’.
