Digital house arrest of woman posing as CBI officer, duped of Rs 2 lakh in 6 hours

A sensational case of fraud of Rs 2 lakh by arresting a woman through digital house arrest has come to light in Delhi. Police said that a woman here lost Rs 2 lakh in 6 hours. The accused, posing as CBI officers, forcibly transferred the money from him. Based on the complaint of the victim, a case has been registered and three accused have been arrested.

Police said that the accused have been identified as Raju Ray (29), Guddu Kumar Sharma (29) and Pappu Kumar (22). All are residents of Bihar. This incident happened in North East Delhi last week. The accused called the victim woman and said that they were CBI officers. Her husband, an NDMC employee, has been arrested in a rape case.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Joy Tirkey said, a complaint was received from an NDMC employee that his wife received a call from an unknown number. The caller introduced himself as a CBI officer. They told her about her husband’s arrest in a rape case and asked for Rs 2 lakh to release her and threatened to defame her if he did not pay her.

DCP said that under the influence of the three accused, the woman transferred money to two bank accounts given by them. The accused did not allow him to disconnect the phone call for about six hours. After this the victim filed a case against the accused. Based on intelligence and technical evidence, police conducted raids at many places in Bihar.

Police caught three accused from here. His involvement in other cases is being ascertained. Efforts are being made to nab his remaining associates. Digital house arrest is a tactic in which cyber criminals imprison victims in their homes to defraud them. Criminals create fear and take advantage of it by making audio or video calls.
