November 18, 2024: The ongoing legal dispute between Nayanthara and Dhanush has escalated with the latter’s lawyer issuing a stern statement demanding removal of the allegedly infringing content from the trailer. Controversy surrounds a three-second behind-the-scenes clip from the 2015 film Nanum Roddy Daan, Produced by Dhanush, it was featured in the trailer of Nayanthara’s Netflix documentary.
Dhanush’s legal position
Dhanush’s legal representative responds to Nayanthara’s open letter, claiming that as producer Nanum Roddy Daan, Dhanush owns all rights to the clip, including behind-the-scenes material. The statement declared that the actress’s claims that the BTS footage was independently recorded were “baseless” and asked her to provide evidence.
The lawyer also highlighted the lack of clarity regarding the ownership of the video in Nayanthara’s submission, stressing that the content in question was a copyright owned by the film’s producer Dhanush.

The legal notice issued to Nayanthara and Netflix India requires removal of the controversial video within 24 hours. Failure to comply will result in legal action seeking damages of Rs 10 crore. The notice read: “Advise your client to remove content that infringes on the copyright of my client’s film Nanum Roddy Daan Use the same content in your client’s documentary Nayanthara: Beyond Fairy Tales Within 24 hours or my client will be forced to take appropriate legal action. “
Nayanthara’s open letter
The controversy began when Nayanthara wrote an emotional open letter accusing Dhanush of refusing to issue a no-objection certificate (NOC) for the use of the footage, even though her team took two years to obtain permission. She expressed frustration at the legal hurdles and called Dhanush’s behavior an “all-time low,” claiming his lawsuit stemmed from a personal vendetta rather than legitimate business concerns.
