Dantras 2024: Dhanteras is celebrated every year on the date of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi. Buying gold, silver and new utensils on this day is considered very auspicious. Why do we light the “Lamp of Hell” in Dantras?
In the evening of Dhanteras, after worshiping Lord Kuber and Dhanvatri, a lamp in the name of Yamraj is lit. Lighting this lamp is said to eliminate the fear of premature death and accidents.
How to light the Yama Lamp?
To light the Yama lamp, take a large clay lamp with four sides. Install four lamps inside and pour mustard oil. This lamp is then lit in the evening during Pradosh in the presence of all family members. Bring this light to every corner of your home. After that, place it outside the house in a south-facing location.

October 29th from 5:30 pm to 7:02 pm is the auspicious time for Dhanteras to light the Yama Lamp. During this period, the Yama lamp is lit.
The story behind the lighting
According to legend, there was a king in a certain kingdom named Herm. By the grace of God, he was blessed with a son. The son’s horoscope stated that the prince would die four days after the wedding. Under these circumstances, the king sent him to a place where no girl’s shadow could fall on him, but there he married a princess.
According to custom, on the fourth day of the wedding, Yamraj’s messenger came to see the prince. The prince’s wife began to mourn and asked the messenger for a solution to avoid an untimely death. The messenger told all this to Yamraj. Then Yamraj says death is inevitable. But one who lights the lamp on the day of Dhanteras i.e. Trayodashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik is saved from premature death. That is why there is a tradition of lighting the Yama lamp every year in Dhanteras.
