Delhi’s old drainage system will be changed, MCD staff will work 24 hours in monsoon

Common people are losing their lives due to waterlogging in Delhi. Due to water logging on the roads, people of Delhi are facing heavy traffic jams. Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor Shaili Oberoi has announced that the decades-old drainage system of Delhi which has deteriorated will be replaced. According to the Mayor, 20-30 years old drainage system is working in Delhi. It has not been changed for years and is completely dilapidated. Besides, MCD officers have also been instructed to prepare a list of defective drainage systems and estimate the cost of replacing them.

Let us tell you that this announcement has come at a time when three UPSC students have died due to waterlogging in the basement of the coaching institute of Rajendra Nagar. In this entire matter, the High Court has reprimanded the Municipal Corporation and has also given instructions to clean all the drains and remove encroachments in Rajendra Nagar area.

Delhi’s drainage system will be changed

Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor Shaili Oberoi said on Thursday that recently three children had lost their lives due to water logging in the basement of a coaching center in Rajendra Nagar. Monsoon is still continuing in Delhi and the problem of waterlogging is visible at many places. In view of this, some important instructions have been given to the officials.

Wherever coaching centers or libraries are running illegally in basements in Delhi, they are being sealed and this work will continue in future also. Secondly, a case of encroachment has also come to light in the case of Rajendra Nagar. A campaign will be launched across Delhi to remove encroachments from footpaths and drains. Besides, all the drains which were closed due to encroachment will be opened. So that there is no waterlogging due to heavy rains. Portable pumps will be installed at all such points where there is more problem of water logging.

Action will be taken against illegal constructions

Apart from this, the Mayor said that clear instructions have been given to the MCD Commissioner that all the officers and staff of MCD will work 24 hours till the monsoon. Their duty will be assigned in different shifts, so that an incident like Rajendra Nagar does not happen in Delhi. Apart from this, wherever there are open wires and cables across Delhi, they will be surveyed and immediate action will be taken against them in collaboration with NDPS and BSES.

Recently, a student preparing for UPSC died due to electric shock. Also, there are old barrels in many areas of Delhi, where sewer and drain water flow together. The problem of water logging is highest in these areas. Therefore, officials have been instructed to survey these areas and take immediate action so that the problem of waterlogging can be reduced.

On Thursday, Mayor Shelly Oberoi held a meeting with Deputy Mayor Aale Iqbal and officials of related departments. In this meeting, all the officers have been instructed to prepare a list of those drains at the ward level in Delhi which need to be improved.

MCD officers and staff will work 24 hours

In many areas of Delhi, the same old drainage system has been working for the last 20-30 years, which has not been changed for years and which has completely deteriorated. Officials have also been instructed to submit estimates of the expenditure on each drain as per this list. Work on these works will be started quickly from the discretionary fund of the Mayor so that the problem of water logging in Delhi can be solved and incidents like Rajendra Nagar do not happen again.
