A Delhi-based app developer has taken a unique approach to fund his studies at Cambridge University by offering to sell JioHotstar website domain names to Reliance Industries (RIL) or Viacom18 for a fee.

The techie addressed RIL executives on the simply designed website www.jiohotstar.com, who may seek to own the domain as news reports confirmed the company’s deal with streaming giant Disney Hotstar+.

“Dear Reliance Industries Executive, I am a Delhi-based app developer currently starting a business. In early 2023, I was browsing social media and saw a news report stating that Disney+ Hotstar was losing daily active users. IPL streaming licenses are being lost and Disney is considering selling Hotstar or merging it with an Indian rival,” the techie wrote.

The person added that the group is likely to follow the same process as Hotstar based on the rebranding of Jio’s previous acquisition of music app Saavn and therefore plans to capitalize on this.

“This leads me to speculate that as Sony and Zee are looking to merge, Viacom 18 (owned by Reliance) is the only major player with enough resources to acquire Disney+ Hotstar. It reminds me of when Jio acquired music streaming service Saavn. , They renamed it JioSaavn and changed the domain name from Saavn.com to JioSaavn.com, and I thought, “If they acquire Hotstar, they might rename it JioHotstar.com.” “I checked the domain and it was available. I was excited because I felt if this happened I could fund my goal of studying at Cambridge,” he added.

Why choose Cambridge?

The app developer explained his goals for studying at Cambridge in an online letter, saying he was involved in a project selected for the University’s 2021 Accelerate programme. He added that as a second-level college-educated student, exposure to the program made him want to pursue a full degree in entrepreneurship at the School of Education.

“In 2021, I am working on a project that was selected for the Acceleration Program at Cambridge University. It was a transformative experience for me. I couldn’t crack the IITs but always wanted to learn from the best from the second tier institutes, Being selected for this program was a very valuable and hands-on experience. This entrepreneurship program taught me a lot of valuable lessons and provided insights into the ins and outs of startups for free. It was great, but it was limited in scope. Just a launch plan,” he said.

“Cambridge also offers a full entrepreneurship degree, which I had always dreamed of pursuing but could never afford. It’s Cambridge and quite expensive. When I saw this area available, I felt like things might fall into place. I The intention to buy this domain was simple: if this merger happens, I might be able to realize my dream of studying at Cambridge,” he added.
