Delhi: Congress and AAP swap leaders in Seerampur seat, will the equation change?

Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal and Malikajun Haq.

Seerampur assembly seat grabbed headlines for riots in Delhi. Earlier, the Aam Aadmi Party canceled the votes of the sitting MPs and named Zubair, the son of senior Congress leader Chaudhry Martin, as its candidate. Angry over Arvind Kejriwal’s decision, sitting MLA Abdul Rehman has joined the Congress.

The Congress will reportedly field Abdul Rehman from Seerampur as its candidate. Seerampur is the first seat of the Delhi Assembly and Aam Aadmi Party and Congress candidates have been meeting here.

Why is Delhi’s Seerampur seat important?

Seerampur Council is named after the village of Seerampur. Seelampur village is located in Shahdara district. Seelampur is connected to the GT Highway which passes through Haryana. Seerampur is also famous for e-waste disposal. All electronic waste in the country is disposed of here.

It is said that the existence of Seerampur came into existence only during the Mughal period. Seerampur also played an important role in the freedom movement. After 1990, Seerampur became famous for riots. Seerampur suffered severe violence during the 1992 Babri riots.

When violence broke out in Delhi over the CAA five years ago, Seerampur was the worst hit.

Caste equation for Seelampur seat

This area in northeast Delhi is predominantly Muslim. The Muslim population here accounts for about 55%. During the delimitation in 2008, some Muslim areas here were also cut off and attached to neighboring parliamentary seats.

From 1993 to the present, MLAs have always been Muslims, regardless of party affiliation. Besides Muslims, there are Brahmins and Thakur people here. The total of the two is about 10%.

Dalits are also the X-factor in Seerampur, but only if the Muslim votes are divided. Jains account for about 1.6% here. Apart from this, Vaishyas and people from other OBC castes also live here.

Chaudhary Matin Ahmed has won 5 times

In the 1993 elections, Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed contested for the first time in this seat that was the hallmark of the PPP. In this election, the Congress party gave its vote to Sultan Ahmed. Martin won the election by about 1,500 votes. Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Jakishan Das Gupta came second.

In 1998, Martin Ahmed ran as an independent candidate. This time the Congress party nominated Saladin, but this time the Congress candidate was still in third place. Independent Martin wins from here. In 2003, Congress sent Martin here as its symbol.

Upon entering Congress, Martin’s lead exceeded 21,000 points. Martin won the seat on the Congress party symbol in 2008 and 2013. In 2015, he was defeated by AAP’s Mohammad Israq. In 2020, Martin lost to Abdul Rahman.

Martin was rumored to run for Parliament in 2025, but just before the election, Martin joined the AAP. The party has given tickets to Martin’s son Zubair from here.

Now know MLA Abdul Rehman

AAP gave its rally ticket to Rahman for the first time in 2020, who started his political career as an MP. Before becoming a provincial councilor, Rehman was a councilor from Jaffrabad city. During the 2019 CAA riots, Lehman was accused of inciting crowds. A case has also been registered against him in this case.

Rehman defeated the BJP’s Kaushal Mishra in the 2020 elections by about 37,000 votes. Congressman Chaudhary Matin came third with 20,000 votes. Rehman was expected to get votes in this election, but based on investigations, the AAP canceled Rehman’s votes. Now Lehman has joined Congress.

Will Seelampur’s equation change?

After the Congress and AAP fielded Muslim candidates, the question is will the equation change in Seerampur this time? There are about 1,09,000 voters in Seerampur, of which about 1,00,30,000 voters cast their votes. Last time your candidate received 57,000 votes. 37,000 votes were cast in favor of the BJP candidate and 20,000 votes were cast in favor of the Congress candidate.

If a triangular fight emerges this time, the equation here may also change. This time in the Delhi elections, the Congress is paying more attention to Muslim-dominated seats. Meanwhile, Asaduddin Owaisi’s party is also preparing to launch strikes in predominantly Muslim areas.

AIMIM also announced its candidate for Mustafabad seat.
