Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal shared the interesting story behind the name of his food delivery platform.

Goyal revealed that he initially wanted to name his company “Tomato” but could not do so due to domain name issues.

He revealed the news while appearing on the latest episode of comedy show The Great Indian Kapil Show alongside wife Gia Goyal. The episode also features Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy and his wife Sudha Murthy, a member of India’s federal parliament.

The show hosted by Kapil Sharma is currently streaming on Netflix.

Kapil Sharma has questioned Deepinder Goyal for naming his company Zomato.

“We have heard about potatoes and tomatoes, but what does Zomato mean?” Sharma asked.

“I saw an ad where cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth were arguing that it was ‘Zomato’ or ‘Zomaato’. So, what is the real story? Where did the name come from?” he added.

Goyal said they had to change one letter of the word “tomato” to get the domain name.

Replying to Kapil’s question, Goyal smiled and said: “This, ‘tomato’ or ‘tomato’, whatever you want to say – we want this name as .com. We want ‘tomato dot com’ , but we didn’t get the domain name… so we changed the alphabet and got Zomato dot com.”

Hence, Zomato got its name due to its inability to get the required domain name.

Marketing at Zomato

Kapil Sharma also asked Goyal about Zomato’s romance app notifications. For this, the Zomato CEO praised his marketing team and said: “Sometimes, my romantic messages to Gia would trigger notifications on the app,” he said.

“I give our marketing team full credit, they took my idea of ’building relationships with customers’ a little too seriously,” Goyal added.

Deepinder Goyal and Gia Goyal’s first meeting

He also shared the first time he met his wife, Grecia Munoz, who is from Mexico and who recently changed her name to Gia Goyal.

“I was single for a long time and my friends would set me up on dates and always advise me not to take things too seriously,” Goyal said.

“But when Gracia first came to Derry, a friend called me and said, ‘You need to meet a girl… You have to meet her;’ “You’ll eventually marry her.

“I was interested, so we met…” he added.
