The Supreme Court is going to give its decision today on the bail plea of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. If Delhi CM Kejriwal gets bail, he can come out of jail after a long wait. The Delhi Excise Policy case has made a lot of headlines in the last two years, especially, it also got a lot of discussion due to the arrests of big high profile leaders in this case. Now the number of people getting bail in this case is increasing rapidly. Just recently, former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia was also released.

What has happened recently in the excise policy matter?

In recent weeks, there has been a surge in the number of bails, especially after the Supreme Court granted bail to former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, with the expectation that the decision would provide legal benefits to other accused as well. Till April 2024, out of the 16 arrests made by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), only 5 accused had got bail. Now, out of the total 18 arrests, only one accused is yet to get relief.

What is the situation in the ED case?

Out of the total 18 accused arrested by the ED, 14 have been granted bail by the courts, including 11 regular bail and 3 interim bail. Three arrested accused have been granted interim bail, including Arvind Kejriwal, Hyderabad businessman Abhishek Boinpalli and Amit Arora, director of a liquor company. Delhi businessman Amandeep Dhall is still in judicial custody, and the Delhi High Court order on his bail plea is pending.

AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, and BRS leader K Kavita have also been granted bail by the Supreme Court. Apart from these, AAP’s former communication in-charge Vijay Nair, liquor businessman Sameer Mahendru, Pernod Ricard India’s regional manager Binoy Babu are also out on bail. Apart from this, Chariot Production Media director Rajesh Joshi, Punjab liquor businessman Gautam Malhotra, Hyderabad businessman Arun Pillai, AAP volunteer Chanpreet Singh and Vinod Chauhan have also got bail.

In addition, three arrested persons have subsequently availed the benefit of being released by turning government witnesses, including:

P Sarath Chandra Reddy, director of Aurobindo Pharma
Raghav Magunta, son of Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy
Dinesh Arora is a businessman

Status of CBI case:

Two of the 9 accused arrested by the CBI are still in jail. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi businessman Amandeep Dhall are still in judicial custody. Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and BRS leader K Kavitha were recently granted bail by the Supreme Court. AAP’s former communications in-charge Vijay Nair, Hyderabad businessman Abhishek Boinpalli, Hyderabad CA Buchi Babu Gorantla, news channel head Arvind Kumar Singh, and AAP volunteer Chanpreet Singh were also arrested by the CBI and have been granted bail.
