A report has come out on road accidents and deaths in the capital Delhi. This report has been released by the Transport Department of the Delhi Government. If this report is to be believed, four people die in road accidents every day in Delhi.

What is worrying is that the number of road accidents and deaths in them have reached pre-Covid levels. In the two years of Covid, 2020 and 2021, there was a decrease in road accidents and deaths in them. But in 2022, this figure has again reached the level of 2019. In comparison to 2021, the number of such fatal road accidents has increased by 28% in 2022.

This report titled ‘Delhi Road Crash Fatalities’ gives figures till 2022. It states that in 2022, there were 1,517 fatal road accidents in the capital Delhi, in which 1,571 people died. That is, on an average, 4 people are dying in road accidents every day.

According to this report, 50% of the people who lost their lives in road accidents were walking on the road. Whereas, 45% were those who were either riding a two-wheeler or a three-wheeler. That is, a total of 97% of the deaths have been of pedestrians, motorcyclists or cyclists and people riding auto rickshaws.

This report of the Delhi government shows that most of the people who lose their lives in road accidents are men. 89% of the people who lose their lives in road accidents in Delhi are men. Not only this, most of the people who die are young.

According to the report, most of the people who lose their lives in road accidents are between 20 and 39 years of age. Of the total deaths in Delhi in 2022, 609 were between the ages of 20 and 39.

This report shows that 81% of road accidents in Delhi were caused by heavy vehicles and light motor vehicles (LMV). Whereas, 59% of the cases were hit and run. In hit and run cases, the highest number of deaths (57%) were of pedestrians. After that were two-wheeler riders (33%).

The report shows that the number of road accidents increases as darkness sets in. Most deaths occur between 9 pm and 2 am. According to the report, more than 35% of the deaths occurred between 9 pm and 2 am. 521 deaths were recorded in these five hours. This is the time when most cases of hit and run are reported, because people drive at high speed in the darkness of night.

Not only this, Saturday, Sunday and Monday are the most dangerous days in terms of fatal road accidents. Most deaths occurred on these three days. 674 or 45% deaths occurred on these three days in 2022.

North Delhi is at the forefront in road accidents and hit and run cases. In 2022, there were 260 road accidents in North Delhi, out of which 150 were hit and run cases. North-east Delhi is the safest in this case. There were 53 accidents here, out of which 34 were hit and run cases.

India has the worst roads!

According to a report by the University of London, the quality of roads in India is the worst. Only 3% of India’s roads are national highways, while 75% of highways have only two lanes. India’s roads are also very congested. 40% of the roads are dirty and more than 30% of the villages have not yet been connected to roads.

Last year, a World Bank report on road safety was released. This report said that India has only 1% of the world’s vehicles, but 11% of the road accidents in the world happen here. That is, out of every 100 accidents, 11 accidents happen in India.

According to a World Bank report, every year 1.50 lakh people die in road accidents in India, while more than 7.50 lakh people become disabled. Most of the victims of accidents are pedestrians or cyclists.

At the same time, in 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) also released a report on road safety. This report gave the figures of 2016. According to this, most road accidents happen in America and Japan, but deaths occur in India. In America, 37,461 people died in more than 22 lakh road accidents. Whereas, in India, more than 1.50 lakh people died in about 5 lakh accidents.

A report of the Delhi government shows that in New York (USA), one out of every 30 road accidents results in death. Whereas, in Tokyo (Japan), one out of every 59 road accidents results in death of someone. Whereas, in Delhi, every fourth road accident is fatal.

The World Bank report shows that in a decade (2011-2020), more than 13 lakh deaths occurred in India, while more than 50 lakh people were injured.
