The tradition of celebrating the festival of Dahi Handi is coming from the Dwapar era. This festival reminds us of the childhood antics of Lord Krishna. Just as Lord Krishna used to break the pot to steal butter in his childhood form, similarly, his devotees celebrate this festival by breaking the pot of curd remembering the playful antics of Kanhaiya.

According to mythological beliefs, in the Dwapar era, Lord Shri Krishna used to steal butter and sugar candy with his friends in his childhood and distribute it among his friends. That is why Kanha is also called butter thief. It is said that due to fear of butter being stolen, the Gopis used to hang the pot of butter at a high place in the house. But Kanhaiya used to steal butter with the help of his friends.

This festival is celebrated with great pomp in many places of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh like Mathura, Vrindavan and Gokul.
