Speaking on the subject, she emphasized her deep connection to the character of Elphaba and her desire to protect it. “I’m passionate about it and I know the fans are passionate about it,” she explained, acknowledging her emotional reaction to the revised poster.

The original poster, released by Universal Pictures and directed by Jon M. Chu, paid homage to the Broadway musical, but fan edits hid Erivo’s eyes and much of his face to be more consistent with the animated version . Erivo noted the importance of establishing connections between people through visual expression, saying, “I chose to look down the barrel of the lens…because without words, we communicate with our eyes.”

She said having her face edited in this way felt like erasure, describing it as “deeply hurtful”. Erivo further criticized the trend, comparing it to other disrespectful online content and stressing that it was neither funny nor cute, but rather a reflection on herself and her co-star Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda insult.
