Cyclone Vangar caused severe damage, landslides occurred in Tamil Nadu, seven people, including children, were buried under the rubble

A landslide hit a building at the foot of a hillside in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvannamalai district on Sunday night. Seven people from two families, including children, may have been trapped in the landslide. According to preliminary understanding, the landslide was caused by heavy rains in the area due to the impact of Cyclone Fongal.

District Collector D. Bhaskar Pandian said five of those trapped inside the house were children. No trace of him was found. The incident took place on Sunday night when a landslide occurred at VOC Nagar, located at the foothills of Annamalayar in Thiruvannamalai, damaging several houses.

As houses in the area were pinned down by boulders, the district administration has sought help from NDRF and SDRF teams to launch rescue operations. According to the Collector, there is a danger of rocks falling if the rescue operation is not done correctly. Several other houses near the incident were also damaged. The government has moved locals to safe places. Teams of local police, SDRF and NDRF are busy rescuing people buried under the rubble.

Rainfall in Puducherry breaks three-decade record

Let us tell you that due to the impact of Cyclone Fingal, Puducherry received rainfall on Saturday and Sunday that broke the 30-year record. Cyclone Fangal reached Puducherry on Saturday and weakened on Sunday. However, due to its impact, heavy rains in the Union Territory disrupted normal life and the army had to intervene to rescue people stranded on the roads.

Chennai airport resumes operations

Villupuram in neighboring Tamil Nadu state also suffered severe damage due to rains and floods. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin called the rainfall in the region “unprecedented”. Officials said the Chennai airport resumed operations after midnight but initially had to cancel several flights and had several aircraft delayed. However, operations returned to normal later in the day. Services at the Chennai airport were suspended on Saturday in view of the cyclone.
