Cyclone in Odisha leaves 50,000 houses without power, mobile charging rates fixed

In the wake of cyclone Dana in Odisha, power to 50,000 houses remains completely disconnected.

In Odisha, power supply has not been restored to more than 50,000 houses in areas affected by Cyclone Dana. State Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi gave this information to the media on Sunday after taking stock of the situation in the aftermath of the cyclone. He said that around 50,000 houses in the cyclone-affected areas of Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore districts of the state have yet to receive power supply.

At the same time, people in these areas are facing a lot of problems due to lack of electricity. People lined up in front of generators to charge their phones. Not only that, charging the mobile phone battery also costs Rs 20 per hour. If you want to refill the water tank, you need to pay 300 rupees. CM Manjhi said power supply has not been restored in these areas due to waterlogging.

Around 30,000 people are still in evacuation centers – CM Manjhi

CM Mohan Charan Manjhi said the restoration work is in the final stages. Closed roads have been reopened. He said power supply has been restored to 98% of the affected areas. Of the 2.284 million electricity consumers affected by the hurricane, 2.232 million households have electricity. He said power supply to around 50,000 houses in Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore districts was yet to be restored as these villages were submerged.

He said about 7,000 employees were involved in restoring power supply to areas affected by the hurricane. The state government has moved more than 800,000 people to 6,210 evacuation centers in affected areas. Meanwhile, the CM said that most people have returned to their homes after the situation returned to normal. In total, about 30,000 people were still in 470 evacuation centers as their homes were submerged in water, he said.

DM Damage Assessment Report Submission Instructions

The chief minister said that as per preliminary estimates, more than 2.21 lakh acres of crops in 4,100 villages in 12 blocks of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur and Mayurbhanj were damaged by the natural calamity. He said a detailed damage assessment would be carried out after water levels receded in the area. The CM said that the district collector has been asked to submit a damage assessment report by November 2. This way the affected people can be compensated.

On the other hand, people are also making arrangements on their own in view of power issues. Those who own generator sets that run on petrol and diesel are providing services to people in the area by collecting money. A youth from Nuagaon village in Bhadrak district said: “I pay Rs 20 per hour to recharge my mobile phone. We request the authorities concerned to restore power supply as soon as possible.
