A local Congress leader was killed in a crude bomb attack in Malda following Saturday’s blast in West Bengal’s capital Kolkata.A local Congress leader was killed in a shooting and improvised bomb attack in West Bengal’s Malda district on Sunday morning, police said.

Reports said the deceased was identified as Congress leader Sheikh Saifuddin. He was considered an influential leader in Manichakgopalpur district. His family members claimed that TMC-backed goons murdered him. However, the ruling party in the state denied the allegations.

The incident took place at Dharampur Stand Market around 9 am. Saifuddin’s family claimed that four or five people with their faces covered opened fire and threw two crude bombs at them. He said he died on the spot.

Reports said tension spread in the area after the murder. Police said they have begun investigating the matter. Efforts are underway to identify those involved in the murder of the police officer.

After the incident, a person standing nearby said that he was standing in a teahouse not far away when a huge explosion occurred. When he ran there, he saw a man lying on the ground with his hand blown off. The person said, “The injured person took something out of a bag on the road, which contained a bomb, and then it exploded.”
