By-elections are to be held on 10 assembly seats of UP. The election schedule for the assembly by-elections has not been announced yet, but political activities have increased regarding it. After lagging behind the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the Lok Sabha elections, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now gearing up to show its strength in the by-elections, while a round of meetings is going on among the opposition parties too. While churning is going on over the names of the candidates, some parties have also finalized some names for the seats. How far have the preparations of which party reached for the UP by-elections?

CM Yogi busy in solving equations

After the Lok Sabha election results, the one seat of UP which was mentioned the most is Faizabad Lok Sabha seat which also includes Ramnagari Ayodhya. On the lines of ‘Our defeat is more discussed than your victory’, BJP’s defeat on this seat remains a topic of discussion. BJP wants to end this situation by giving a message from Ayodhya itself. The importance of Milkipur assembly seat of Ayodhya for BJP can be gauged from the fact that CM Yogi has visited Ramnagari twice in the last week and the responsibility of winning this seat rests on the shoulders of CM Yogi. CM Yogi also said during the recent visit to Ayodhya, “Ayodhya itself should worry about its honor and the Hindu society should see who is worrying about them. Ayodhya is not a matter of victory for us but the way our defeat will be seen.” Ayodhya should ponder over what was propagated from.” In the meeting held to review the Lok Sabha election results, CM Yogi had also given a mantra to everyone to make united efforts to win all the seats in the by-elections.

Talking about the recently held Lok Sabha elections, BJP was behind SP by seven thousand votes in Milkipur assembly constituency. To bridge this gap, district in-charge minister Surya Pratap Shahi is also holding regular meetings with the workers of Milkipur. BJP is also trying its best on Katehari assembly seat of Ambedkar Nagar adjacent to Ayodhya. Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh has been made in-charge here. If we look at the electoral equation, BJP has not won this seat since 1991. BJP is looking for a formula to make Lotus bloom on this seat. At the same time, Lalji Verma, who was the MLA from this seat, is trying to get ticket for his wife Shobhavati Verma or daughter Chhaya Verma from SP. Bhim Nishad is also claiming ticket from SP.

Akhilesh engaged in reviewing seat wise preparations

As soon as the monsoon session of Parliament ends, SP President Akhilesh Yadav is seen in action mode regarding the by-elections. Contenders are coming to meet Akhilesh to confirm their tickets in the by-elections to be held on 10 seats. It is almost certain that Awadhesh Prasad’s son will get the ticket from Ayodhya. According to sources, the party can field Lalji Verma’s daughter or wife in Ambedkar Nagar, Tej Pratap Yadav from Karhal, Irfan Solanki’s wife or his mother from Sisamau and former MLA Haji Rizwan from Kundarki. SP can field former MP Kadir Rana from Meerapur Assembly. This seat was last held by Rashtriya Lok Dal in the alliance, which is now with BJP. SP can field any leader of Kurmi community from Phulpur assembly seat. SP lost this seat in the 2022 assembly elections by only 2792 votes.

BSP chief Mayawati also in action

BSP, which usually stays away from by-elections, is also preparing to contest the by-elections this time. This will be the first time since 2012 that BSP is going to contest assembly by-elections. BSP chief Mayawati is also in action mode regarding this and in the meeting a day before, she called BSP a party of the poor and the oppressed and called upon the leaders and workers to work unitedly to increase the support base. While talking to Aaj Tak, BSP State President Vishwanath Pal said that the names of Shivbaran Pasi from Phulpur and Deepak Tiwari from Majhwa seat are almost finalized. These two leaders have just been made in-charge.

Congress also ready for UP by-elections

UP Congress is also preparing and holding meetings for the by-elections. Congress may soon hand over the responsibility to senior leaders for the preparation of 10 by-election seats. If Congress sources are to be believed, the party is claiming 5 seats in the by-elections of 10 seats. SP is not yet ready to give more than two seats to Congress.
