Speaking of ceremonial stools
On the occasion of his retirement, DY Chandrachud also revealed that he wanted to hear “as many cases as possible” before being enshrined in the ceremonial bench. Yesterday, when my court staff asked me when the ceremonial seats would be listed, I said I would work on as many cases as I could. I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to get justice until the very end.
overwhelmed by everyone’s presence
The Chief Justice said: ‘Last night I was thinking the court was going to be vacated at 2pm and I saw myself on the screen. I am overwhelmed by the presence of all of you. I was humbled by the number of people in the courtroom.
DY Chandrachud is satisfied with his work
On his final day as India’s chief justice, Chandrachud accepted the reality that he would no longer serve as the country’s top judge. He says from tomorrow I won’t be able to do justice, but I’m content. Chandrachud describes the role of judges as pilgrims who come to the court every day with a commitment to serve. He said the work we do can make or break things. He said he felt reassured by handing over the bench to the able Judge Sanjeev Khanna. Sanjeev Khanna will become the next chief justice of the country.
DY Chandrachud tells his father’s story
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said in his farewell speech that my father bought a small flat in Pune. I asked him, why do you want to buy a flat in Pune? When do we go and stay there? He said I knew I would never live there. He said, I don’t know how long I will stay with you. But do one thing, stick around until the last day of your term as a judge. We ask why is this happening? He said if you feel your moral integrity or intellectual integrity has been compromised. I want you to know you have a roof over your head. Never allow yourself as a lawyer or judge to be compromised by not having a position of your own.
Addressing the valedictory ceremony, Chandrachud said, “Thank you very much for this great honor…I would like to thank the Supreme Court Bar Association from the bottom of my heart for organizing this event…when I was growing up.. While I was there, my mother told me that I have named you Dhananjay, but the “wealth” in your “Dhananjay” is not material wealth.
Became CJI two years ago
Let us tell you that DY Chandrachud took over as the 50th Chief Justice of the country two years ago in November. In May 2016, he was appointed as a Supreme Court judge. The CJI also took up several petitions before retiring today.
