The brutality against two minor girls in Maharashtra has shocked the entire country. The alleged sexual assault on two fourth-grade girls has sparked outrage. On August 17, the police arrested a school attendant under relevant sections of the POCSO Act for abusing the girls. The parents of the victim girls filed a case in this matter a day later. Because the accused had threatened the girls, the parents came to know about it late. Dr. Omprakash, a senior psychiatrist at IHBAS Delhi, says that identifying sexual abuse can often be challenging, as children may be unable or uncomfortable sharing this painful experience. Still, there are some signs that may point to this abuse.

Actually, sexual abuse of children is a serious and sensitive issue, which remains a matter of concern in every section of the society. It is very important for parents, teachers, and other members of the society to be aware and vigilant to identify and prevent this type of abuse. Therefore, we talked in detail with Dr. Omprakash, Senior Psychiatrist of IHBAS, Delhi, on the signs of sexual abuse of children, the role of parents and teachers, preventive measures, and the role of society and government.

Recognizing signs of sexual abuse

Dr Omprakash said that first of all, sudden changes in the child’s behavior can be observed such as extreme silence, fear, or sadness. Additionally, physical symptoms such as stomach pain, headaches, or other physical problems can also be a sign of abuse, especially when these symptoms arise without an apparent cause. Unusual injuries or marks on the body can also be a clear sign of sexual abuse, which cannot be linked to a normal accident. Sleep disturbances, frequent nightmares, or sudden awakening from sleep can also be signs that the child is going through some mental stress or abuse.

The role of parents and teachers

Parents and teachers play an important role in children’s lives, and they are often the first people to notice any unusual behavior. If a child suddenly begins to feel a drop in self-confidence, avoids spending time with a certain person, or withdraws from social activities, this could be a warning sign.

Additionally, if the child displays inappropriate sexual knowledge or behavior for his or her age, this could also be a sign of sexual abuse. Parents and teachers should also pay attention to how the child is performing in school. If the child is suddenly unable to pay attention, his or her grades are dropping, or he or she is finding excuses to avoid going to school, this should be taken seriously.

Preventive measures

Dr. Omprakash believes that the most important step to prevent sexual abuse is to give children the right information about their bodies and teach them which touches are right and which are wrong. It is important to explain to children that they can say “no” in any uncomfortable situation and talk to their parents, teachers, or any other trusted person.

Parents and teachers should encourage regular, open and trusting conversations with children. Children should feel confident that they can talk openly about any concerns or doubts they may have. Also, it is imperative to do proper background checks on adults around children, such as teachers, coaches, or caregivers, to ensure they are safe for the child.

Role of society and government

The role of society and government is extremely important in spreading awareness on this issue and enforcing strict laws. Campaigns should be run to increase awareness about sexual abuse in the community. This can include schools, community, and religious organizations so that information about this serious problem can be spread.

The government should enforce strict laws related to sexual abuse and monitor them effectively. Along with this, steps should be taken to make the reporting of such cases simple and safe. In addition, the government and non-governmental organizations should expand psychological, legal, and social support services for victimized children and their families. This will help support them in this difficult time.

It is important to understand that identifying and preventing child sexual abuse is a collective responsibility. Parents, teachers, and other members of society must be vigilant and aware to ensure the safety of children. Along with this, the government and the community must come together and take steps to address this serious problem. Only then can we create a safe and healthy environment in which our children can live without fear and fulfill their dreams.
