Only a few days are left for the Haryana assembly elections and the process of announcing candidates is continuing. In this election, not only glimpses but glimpses of nepotism will be seen. The three most influential political families of the state – Chautala, Bhajan Lal and Bansi Lal – will play an important role in the elections. 13 members of these families are contesting the elections.

Eight members of former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal’s family are in the electoral fray. These include Abhay Chautala, Dushyant Chautala, Sunaina Chautala, Arjun Chautala, Ranjit Singh Chautala, Amit Sihag Chautala, Aditya Chautala and Digvijay Chautala.

Apart from these, three members of Bhajan Lal family, his son Chandra Mohan, grandson Bhavya Bishnoi and nephew Dura Ram are also contesting the elections. From Bansi Lal family, his grandsons Anirudh Chaudhary and Shruti Chaudhary are also contesting the elections.

The struggle to go to the Vidhan Sabha: Those seats where you are in the fray against your own people!

Dabwali: An exciting contest is being witnessed among the Chautala family in the assembly constituency. Here uncle, nephew and brother are facing each other and contesting the elections.

Digvijay Chautala of Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) is pitted against his uncle Aditya Chautala. Aditya is the son of Devi Lal’s son Jagdish Chandra. He is the candidate of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).

Congress’ Amit Sihag Chautala is the brother of Digvijay Chautala. Amit Sihag is the son of Dr. KV Singh. His grandfather Saheb Ram was the brother of the late Chaudhary Devi Lal.

Queens: Here too, members of the Chautala family are contesting against each other. Om Prakash Chautala’s brother Ranjit Singh Chautala is Devi Lal’s third son. He is the current MLA from this seat. He will again contest as an independent. This time he has got the support of JJP. He will face Abhay Chautala’s son and his grandson Arjun Chautala, who is contesting on an INLD ticket.

Tosham: On this seat, there will be a contest between the members of the family of former Haryana CM Bansi Lal. Here, Bansi Lal’s granddaughter Shruti Chaudhary will contest against her cousin Anirudh Chaudhary. Shruti is from BJP while Anirudh is contesting on a Congress ticket. The interesting thing is that Shruti had earlier contested elections on a Congress ticket and when she did not get success, she joined the BJP along with her mother.

Uchana Kalan: There is a contest between the Birendra Singh family and the Chautala family on this seat. In the last 2019 elections, Dushyant Chautala defeated Birendra Singh’s wife and Brijendra Singh’s mother Prem Lala. To take revenge for this, Brijendra Singh has decided to contest against Dushyant Chautala.

However, Prem Lala had earlier defeated Dushyant in 2014. For example, according to the last two election records, the winning ratio of both the families on this seat is 50-50. Now this time it has to be seen which family member people consider as their leader.

Fatehabad: The contest for the seat is also interesting. Sunaina Chautala, daughter-in-law of OP Chautala’s brother Pratap Singh Chautala, is contesting from INLD and is pitted against Bhajan Lal’s nephew Dura Ram, who is a sitting BJP MLA. Dura Ram had won the last election by defeating JJP’s Dr Virendra Siwach. INLD’s Suman Lata came sixth and got only 2,111 votes.

Ambala Cantt: Congress leader Chitra Sarwara has decided to contest as an independent candidate against the party’s candidate Parvinder Singh Pari. Chitra is considered close to senior party leader Kumari Selja, while her father is said to be close to former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Kumari Selja managed to get a ticket for Parvinder Singh Pari. Both are pitted against BJP veteran Anil Vij, who is contesting for the seventh time.

Congress has fielded Chitra’s father Nirmal Singh Chaudhary from Ambala city. He is also pitted against two party rebels Himmat Singh and Jasbir Mallaur, who are contesting as independents.

Pehowa: Two sons of former Haryana Agriculture Minister Jaswinder Singh Sandhu, Jastej Sandhu and Gaganjot Sandhu are contesting against each other from Pehowa assembly constituency. Jastej was expecting a ticket from Congress and Gaganjot from INLD, but did not get it. Congress fielded Mandeep Singh Chattha, son of former Finance Minister Harmohinder Singh Chattha, from this seat, and INLD has given ticket to Baldev Singh.

A family feud that didn’t come true

Charkhi Dadri could have become another constituency where a close contest would have been seen between relatives – Babita Phogat and Vinesh Phogat, but that did not happen. Congress fielded Vinesh Phogat from Julana and Babita was denied a ticket by the BJP. Now she is just a star campaigner. Babita lost her first election in 2019 and finished third.
