Jammu and Kashmir BJP President Ravinder Raina has raised a critical question regarding the National Conference’s (NC) stance on dialogue with Pakistan and its potential impact on terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). His remarks come in the wake of ongoing discussions about the feasibility and effectiveness of engaging with Pakistan to address the persistent issue of terrorism in the region.

Raina’s Concerns

Raina questioned whether the NC could guarantee that dialogue with Pakistan would lead to an end to bloodshed in J&K, particularly from Pakistan-sponsored terrorist groups. He emphasized that the history of such dialogues has not yielded significant results in curbing violence and terrorism, asking, “Can NC guarantee that there would be no bloodshed in J&K by Pakistan sponsored terrorists after holding talks with the neighboring country?”.

The debate over dialogue with Pakistan is not new, as it has been a contentious issue in Indian politics, especially concerning J&K. Proponents argue that dialogue could lead to peace and stability, while opponents, like Raina, contend that previous attempts have failed to stop terrorism and have often been exploited by Pakistan to further its agenda in the region.

Raina’s remarks also reflect broader political dynamics in J&K, where the BJP and NC have opposing views on handling relations with Pakistan. The BJP has consistently taken a hardline stance against any engagement that might be perceived as legitimizing Pakistan’s role in the region, particularly given the historical context of terrorism emanating from across the border. Raina accused NC, along with other regional parties, of not prioritizing the welfare of the people and instead focusing on narratives that could be seen as sympathetic to separatist sentiments.

Raina’s challenge to the National Conference highlights a significant divide in how political parties in J&K view the path to peace and security. The effectiveness of dialogue with Pakistan remains a contentious topic, with many questioning whether such discussions can indeed lead to a decrease in terrorism and violence in the region.
