By-election dates changed in 3 states including UP, voting will now take place on this day

UP assembly by-election

On Monday, the Election Commission changed the dates of by-elections in three states including Uttar Pradesh. Previously, the poll was originally scheduled to be held on November 13, but at the request of several major political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress Party, the committee changed the date of the poll. Voting will now take place here on November 20th. The counting of votes will only take place on the fixed date of November 23rd.

Polling for by-elections for many assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Punjab will now be held on November 20 instead of November 13 due to various festive reasons. The committee changed the date on the request of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Samajwadi Party (BSP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RLD) and many other national and state parties.

Why do I have to change dates in 3 states?

Political parties are concerned that turnout for the November 13 poll may be reduced due to the festive season. Regarding the by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP, RLD and RLD have said that people from Uttar Pradesh will travel three to four days in advance to participate in Kartik Purnima, which will be celebrated on November 15.

Likewise, a majority of the voters in Palakkad Assembly seat in Kerala will celebrate Kalpati Rastovam from November 13 to 15, according to the Kerala Assembly. Similarly, in Punjab, the Congress party said it will celebrate the 555th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev on November 15. Therefore, the Akhand Path event will be held from November 13 onwards.

Out of the 10 vacant seats in Uttar Pradesh, elections are ongoing in nine seats, while in Punjab, four seats will be polled during by-elections. Apart from this, by-elections will be held in two assembly seats in Kerala except the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. Apart from Ghaziabad, by-elections are also going on in Uttar Pradesh’s Phulpur, Majhivan, Kher, Mirapur, Sissa Mau, Kethari, Kalha and Kundalki seats.

There will also be by-elections for 2 Lok Sabha seats

According to the plan announced by the Election Commission, a total of 48 vacant seats in 15 states, including these three states, will undergo by-elections. Besides, voting will also be held on two vacant Lok Sabha seats. To this end, the voting date is set for November 13. But the date had to be changed due to festivals in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Kerala.

Among the two vacant Lok Sabha seats due for by-elections is Wayanad, the Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, where Rahul Gandhi left Wayanad after the Lok Sabha election results were announced in June , while retaining the Ray Bareilly seat. Congress has now fielded Rahul’s sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Apart from this, by-elections are also going on in Nanded constituency in Maharashtra. The voting is underway due to the death of MP Vasant Rao Chavan.
