Bunker-busting bomb: Bomb dug out Nasrallah’s grave in Beirut, leaving a 30-foot-deep hole in the ground

On September 27, 2024, the 69th Squadron of the Israeli Air Force dispatched F-15I fighter jets to launch a rapid attack on Beirut. About 80-85 bunker-busting bombs fell from the sky. Some of them are bombs of the GBU-72 series. Some MK-84 series bombs. This was no ordinary bomb that exploded on the ground. They seep into the ground. Then they explode.

In addition to the ground, if they fall on a building or bunker, the damage can be horrific. The bomb landed on the building where Nasrallah was located, leaving a 30-foot-deep crater. The GBU-72 family of bunker-busting bombs is characterized by its ability to break through thick steel and concrete walls to a depth of 30 to 60 feet.

First, let us understand the characteristics of the GBU-72 bunker destruction bomb…

Hamas has built tunnels underground. Hezbollah has established weapons depots in residential areas. The launch pad has been built. Hezbollah is a hideout for terrorists among ordinary people. Israel has used these bunker-busting bombs to destroy tunnels in Gaza. Israel did the same thing again.

It is understood that the building where Hassan Nasrallah is located. Israel dropped 80 to 85 bunker-busting bombs in surrounding neighborhoods. Bunker busters are bombs that destroy bases built deep underground. They can wreak havoc even deep below the surface. Generally, GBU-72 series bombs are used.

The GBU-72 is a state-of-the-art guided bomb weighing 2268 kg. In fact, it’s only designed to blow up basements, bunkers, or tunnels. The bomb first blew a hole in the ground. Then get a few feet in and explode. If it falls on a building, its foundations will shake.

What are bunker busting bombs and how do they work?

Bunker busting bombs are extremely powerful and terrifying weapons. These bombs will soon be in the ground. They will explode upon reaching the interior. This means they make holes in the ground. Then get a few feet in and explode. They can blow up concrete foundations, bunkers or tunnels. This type of bomb was most commonly used during the Vietnam War.

The warheads of these bombs are made in a special way so that they use their own weight and gravity to travel underground at high speeds. After that they explode. There is another version. It had two charges. The first one is small and punches a hole in the target. The second large part goes inside and causes a horrific explosion.

Where did Israel get such a bomb?

Israel wants to eliminate terrorist tunnels built in Iran. That’s why he asked for the American-made GBU-72 bomb. For the first time, he called on the United States to provide the most modern version of the GBU-72 bomb in 2021. The bomb is currently the most modern bunker buster in the world.

The GBU-72 bunker-busting bomb can blast holes 100 feet deep in regular ground and 20 feet deep in concrete floors. A hole will form upon impact. Explodes after deep penetration. Afterwards, it emits a shock wave so powerful that anything that comes into its path cannot withstand the shock wave. As a result, buildings around the target can also collapse or be damaged.

MK-84 universal bomb, it can also be used…

The bombs are classified as NATO Mark 84 bombs. The Mark 84 bomb is also known as the BLU-117. It weighs approximately 907 kg. It’s made in the USA. This is a universal bomb. This means it could explode. Can blow up a bunker. Can cause buildings to collapse. Can cause terrible damage.

There are currently four Mark 84 bombs available in the world. GBU-10 Paveway 1, GBU-15, GBU-24 Paveway 3 and GBU-31 JDM. Their average weight ranges from 894 to 1000 kilograms. But the United States made these bombs weighing 14,000 kilograms. They are used to destroy large buildings or weapons depots.

These 12.7-foot-long bombs were 18 inches in diameter. They are filled with military-grade chemicals such as Tritonal, H6, and PBXN-109. They were filled to the tune of half the bomb’s weight. These bombs are usually mounted on bombers. Or in a strike fighter. Because they can be used in many ways.

These bombs often have decelerators, parachutes, or pop-up fins on the rear that slow the bomb down as it falls from the sky. This gives the fighter or aircraft that dropped the bomb a chance to stay out of the bomb’s range.
