One of Bollywood’s top actresses Kareena Kapoor’s new film Buckingham Murders hit the theatres on Friday. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics but received mixed reviews from the public. Kareena’s work looked strong in the film’s trailer but as a story, it failed to create a very exciting atmosphere.

So, from day one, the revenue of the film was not what you would expect from a film starring a big star like Kareena. Although the revenue of Buckingham Murders may look small in numbers, it is a good revenue at its level. Let us tell you how…

Kareena’s Shortest Weekend Series
Buckingham Murders collected Rs 115 crore nett on the first day. On Saturday, the film recorded a slight increase and collected Rs 195 crore.

According to Saknilke, Buckingham Murders earned a net revenue of around Rs 220 crore on the third day, Saturday, which is a slight increase. In these three days, i.e. the first weekend, the film Kareena earned around Rs 530 crore.

Statistically, the record of Buckingham Murders cannot be called very reliable. Kareena Kapoor’s last film, in 2009, grossed less than Rs 6 crore in its first weekend. Fifteen years ago, her film with Salman, Main Aur Mrs. Khanna, grossed Rs 4.42 crore in its first weekend. Milenge Milenge, one of Kareena’s biggest flops, also grossed over Rs 7 crore in its first weekend.

Why did the film perform so strongly despite its low ratings?
The revenue level of a film depends not only on its collection but also on how many screens the revenue comes from and the nature of the film.

Buckingham Murders has been released in about 700 screens. This will be one of the smallest releases in Kareena’s career. Apart from this, director Hansal Mehta has done another experiment with the film. The film has two versions released in theatres – one in Hindi only and the other in Hinglish (Hindi-English mix).

Today, Kareena is at this stage in her career where she is experimenting a lot with her film choices. Buckingham Murders is another experimental film from Kareena. His film with director Hansal Mehta is not a masala entertainer or a star project. It is a slowly unfolding suspense thriller with a pace that tests the audience’s patience at times.

Buckingham Murders has made decent revenues for a film that is in such a tight screen count. But if the budget of the film is indeed Rs 40 crore as reported, then the film is on the verge of being a box office flop, even though it seems to be a film that will be very popular on OTT, just like Kareena’s previous Netflix film Jaanejaan.
