BSNL brings D2D technology to make calls without SIM and network, Jio, Airtel will be shocked!

BSNL unveiled its new logo and slogan last month. The government telecom company also launched seven new services, including spam free network, ATS Kiosk and D2D services. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has currently launched D2D, or direct-to-device services, on a trial basis. This way, calls can be made even without any SIM card and mobile network.

What is D2D technology?

This service from BSNL connects mobile devices like smartphones, smartwatches and other gadgets via satellite. It does not require any terrestrial mobile network. BSNL has partnered with Viasat to provide D2D services. Its successful trial was also completed a few days ago. Users will be able to make audio and video calls directly from their mobile devices, without the need for a SIM card.

In the trial, conducted during the India Mobile Congress, BSNL used Android smartphones to make calls over a satellite network from a distance of 36,000 kilometers. This facility of BSNL can be used especially during emergencies or any natural disaster. By using D2D technology, emergency help can be sought, which will help rescue trapped people.

Jio, Airtel are also in the race

Apart from BSNL, Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea are also working on satellite connectivity services. Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s company Starlink and Amazon have also applied to provide satellite services in India. Currently, the two companies have not received approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

The government is currently preparing the spectrum allocation process for satellite connectivity. The telecom ministry has sought suggestions from industry stakeholders on its pricing and allocation. After receiving feedback, the spectrum allocation process will be completed, after which BSNL, Airtel, Jio and other players will be able to launch satellite services.
