Brooke Shields’ daughter, Grier Henchy, made headlines recently when she chose to wear her mother’s first wedding dress to her high school graduation in 2024. The 18-year-old opted for the iconic ivory satin gown that Shields wore when she tied the knot with tennis champion Andre Agassi back in 1997.

Updating a Classic

Grier had a few ideas to make the dress her own. “We had to re-bone it a little bit so it was tight and sleek,” she explained to People magazine. “We took out all the poof because I didn’t want it poofy. And we made it strapless.”

Shields, who is now 59 years old, was thrilled with the final result. “She looked great in it,” the proud mom shared. “It’s such an honor when they want to wear your stuff. Normally they don’t think I’m cool.”

A Family Affair

Grier’s decision to wear her mother’s wedding dress was a special moment for the entire Shields clan. Brooke and her husband Chris Henchy have two daughters – Grier and her older sister Rowan, 21. Both girls recently began their college careers at Wake Forest University in North Carolina.

In a revealing interview with People, Shields and her daughters opened up about life at home, including their shared love of fashion. The actress explained that she allows her kids to borrow anything from her iconic wardrobe. “Honestly, they can wear anything because just to have it have another life– you save the stuff and wonder why,” she said. “It’s like, some big Sotheby’s auction? I highly doubt it. Unless they’re iconic items. So when they have another life, it feels good.”

Keeping Memories Alive

For Shields, seeing her daughters wear her old outfits is a way to honor the past and the memories associated with those special pieces. She cited the dress she wore to marry Agassi in 1997 as a prime example. “He’s a good guy so to me it was really like a big full circle moment,” she explained. “And it honors something and I think that’s healthy.”

This isn’t the first time one of Shields’ daughters has raided her closet. In 2021, Rowan chose to wear her mom’s scarlet red Richard Tyler gown to her high school prom. The dress was originally worn by Shields to the 1998 Golden Globes.

“First of all, if it had been my idea, it never would have gone over. They would have been like, ‘That’s weird.’ So the fact she went downstairs and went through the archives and found it on her own, and it was such a special dress,” Shields shared. “It was made for me by Richard Tyler and I felt so glamorous in it – and I got read the riot act the next day by my agency.”

A Sustainable Approach

Grier’s decision to wear her mother’s wedding dress for her graduation is a prime example of sustainable fashion. By repurposing an existing garment, she not only honored her family’s history but also reduced waste and the environmental impact of fast fashion.

Shields herself seems to embrace this eco-friendly approach to style. “I don’t really base it on antiques or valuable auctions,” she said of her wardrobe. “I just think it’s healthy to see them have another life.”

A Proud Moment

As Grier walked across the stage to receive her diploma, Shields no doubt felt a swell of pride. Her youngest daughter looked radiant in the updated gown, a testament to the timeless elegance of the original design.

“I am endlessly proud of her and she’s looked so beautiful for you, Grier,” Shields gushed in an Instagram caption, sharing photos from the big day.

For Grier, wearing her mom’s wedding dress was a meaningful way to mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. As she embarks on her college journey, she carries with her the love and support of her family – and a little bit of fashion history, too.

A Lasting Legacy

Brooke Shields’ decision to share her iconic wardrobe with her daughters is a gift that will keep on giving. By passing down these special pieces, she ensures that they will continue to be cherished and celebrated for generations to come.

As Grier and Rowan grow older, they will no doubt look back on these moments with fondness. Wearing their mom’s dresses to prom and graduation is more than just a fashion statement – it’s a way to feel connected to her and to the family’s shared history.

For Shields, that connection is everything. “It’s like, some big Sotheby’s auction? I highly doubt it,” she said with a laugh. “Unless they’re iconic items. So when they have another life, it feels good.”

As for Grier’s graduation dress, it’s safe to say that it has cemented its place in the Shields family legacy. A wedding gown turned graduation gown, it’s a testament to the power of love, family, and timeless style.
