  • The man was pulled out of the sea by a swimmer but could not be resuscitated

A British tourist has drowned while diving at a well-known shipwreck in Greece during ‘rough seas’, local media reports.

The man, 33, was swimming at the Epanomi Shipwreck in Thessaloniki when he reportedly got into difficulty on Sunday afternoon.

He was pulled out of the sea by another swimmer as emergency services, including a lifeboat, rushed to the area.

Ambulance crews were unable to resuscitate the unconscious man on the beach and he died at the scene, Greek news site SL Press reports.

The deceased was taken to Hippocrates Hospital, where a postmortem is being carried out. The Port Authority of Michaniona is investigating the death.

The man is said to have been in the water when a brief storm and rain began, creating ‘difficult’ weather conditions.

While the wreck is a popular diving spot on a sandbank near to the shore, local media says it is usually avoided by swimmers in bad weather.

Epanomi is a small town in the Thessaloniki region of northern Greece. The shipwreck beach is less than 20 miles away from Thessaloniki city.

A FCDO Spokesperson said: ‘We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.’
