The relevant bill will be submitted to the Lok Sabha on December 6
The central government will submit two bills related to “one country, one election” in the Lok Sabha on December 16. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will introduce the Constitutional Amendment Bill and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill. The cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the bills on December 12. One of the bills deals with holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies and the other to elections to Union Territories.
Let us tell you that the passage of the constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds majority, while the second bill requires a simple majority of the House of Representatives. Although a high-level committee headed by former President Ramnath Kovind proposed holding municipal and panchayat elections in a phased manner alongside the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, the cabinet has decided not to discuss the issue of local body elections for now .
