‘Boop, The ick, Chef’s Kiss…’, new words added to Cambridge dictionary

The Cambridge dictionary has added more than 3,200 new words and phrases in its new 2024 update, including informal slang words commonly spoken online and among young people. ‘Boop’ and ‘the ick’ are two slang words that have been formally added to the dictionary.

  • The word ‘boop’ is usually used in a joking manner. This word means to touch the nose of a person or animal, usually in a friendly way, such as in a joking manner.
  • The term ‘the ick’ means “a sudden feeling that you dislike someone or something, or that you are no longer attracted to someone because of something they have done.”
  • ‘chef’s kiss’ has been added to the dictionary as a phrase. It is used for an action, such as placing the fingers and thumb together, kissing them, then pulling your hand away from your lips – for example, to show that something or someone is absolutely perfect for you.

What other words were added to the Cambridge dictionary?

Other slang words and abbreviations are also recognized in the Cambridge dictionary, such as ‘IYKYK’ which stands for ‘If You Know You Know.’ Apart from these, words like ‘Face Journey’ have also been added – which shows different emotions visible on a person’s face.

How are words added to the dictionary?

The Cambridge Dictionary team uses the Cambridge English Corpus, a collection of over 2 billion written and spoken English words. Its purpose is to collect as evidence those words which are commonly used by people as new words and phrases. Many terms are also borrowed from the world of online gaming, such as ‘Backread’, ‘Speedrun’, and ‘Side Quest’
