The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) has called for a nationwide protest and closure of OPD and elective services from Tuesday, August 13. The protest follows the sexual harassment and murder of a female postgraduate trainee (PGT) doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

FAIMA posted on X, ‘We stand with the doctors protesting across India! We call upon doctors across the country to join this protest from today! We want justice!’

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda urging him to take immediate action regarding the incident of brutality with the female doctor. IMA has demanded a fair and thorough investigation into the matter to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice. Also, the association has demanded a detailed investigation into the circumstances that led to such a crime.

Emphasizing the need for immediate reforms, IMA requested that steps be taken to enhance the safety of doctors, especially women, at the workplace.

An uproar continues in Kolkata after the body of a female doctor was found in the seminar hall of the hospital on Friday. A 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor on duty at the Government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered on Thursday night. Officials recovered the semi-nude body of a second year student, which had multiple injury marks, in the seminar hall of the Chest Medicine department.

Amid growing public anger, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that if the police do not solve the case by Sunday, she will hand over the case to the CBI.

On the other hand, the protesting students criticized the Chief Minister for setting a deadline of seven days to resolve the matter and stressed that immediate action was needed. He demanded judicial inquiry, death penalty to the culprits, adequate compensation to the victim’s family and tight security arrangements in hospitals.

Three public interest litigations have been filed in the Kolkata High Court, demanding that the investigation be handed over to the CBI. A division bench headed by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam will hear these PILs on Tuesday.
