Athens: A tragic accident occurred in southern Crete, Greece. A boat carrying refugees sank here, killing five people and leaving many missing. The Coast Guard said more than 200 people had been rescued during four search and rescue operations. Three of the four operations have been halted, but one is still ongoing, according to the Coast Guard.
A large number of people were rescued
The operations were launched following reports of multiple capsizing of boats near the island of Gavdos in southern Crete. The fourth campaign is still ongoing and has been launched in the southern Peloponnese region. The coast guard said that 39 people were rescued during the search and rescue operation and have been sent to Crete. During this period, five bodies were also recovered from the waters. People who were rescued safely said there were many people on their boat.
Helicopter help required during rescue operation
The Coast Guard said a total of nine vessels were involved in the rescue effort, and two helicopters were also involved in the rescue effort. Two other operations off the coast of Gavdos rescued 47 and 89 people respectively. These activities have been completed. Meanwhile, 28 refugees have been rescued from the Peloponnese.
Greek ship capsizes
There have been accidents before
It is worth noting that this is not the first time such a ship accident has occurred in Greece, and accidents have occurred before. In November this year, a boat sank off the Greek island of Samos, killing eight people, including six children. In this incident, a ship full of immigrants sank. (Associated Press)
