BNP Paribas Plans to Lift Investment Bank Bonuses by About 5%

(Bloomberg) — BNP Paribas SA plans to raise bonuses for investment bankers, with its equity trading and debt capital markets sectors likely to benefit most from a strong year.

People familiar with the matter said the French lender wanted to increase total variable compensation in the unit by about 5%. The decision is not final and the numbers could still change, they said, requesting anonymity to discuss non-public information.

A spokesman for BNP Paribas declined to comment.

The increase in size will be smaller than the double-digit gains expected by big Wall Street banks. Bank of America Corp. raised pay by about 10%, while traders at Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co. continued to make larger gains, people familiar with the matter said. In Germany, Deutsche Bank AG plans to increase variable pay at its investment bank by about 10%, Bloomberg reported.

People said BNP Paribas’ investment bank’s expected reward returns are averages and unit variations will vary. Stock traders and bankers who issued debt and performed well last year, they said.

Chief Executive Jean-Laurent Bonnafe has made stock trading a priority in recent years, strengthening the unit by taking over corporate and client relationships including Deutsche Bank AG and Credit Suisse AG (Credit Suisse).

Some said there was broad agreement among BNP executives on the size of the overall bonus pool, although individual bonuses would only be communicated in late February.
