Bills related to “One Nation, One Election” will be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday

Simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assembly

A constitutional amendment to hold simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the country is likely to be tabled in Parliament on Tuesday. If the PTI source is credible, it can be sent to the joint committee of both houses. The federal cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week decided to hold simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections but is yet to take a decision on how to conduct local body elections.

The meeting will end on December 20

A bill related to “One Country, One Choice” was listed on the agenda of the House of Representatives on December 16. However, now it will be tabled in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. It is understood that the Modi government has distributed copies of the bill to MPs for their study. Let us tell you that the winter session of Parliament will end on December 20. Therefore, the government has only four days left to introduce this bill related to one country, one election.

Opposition parties protest

Several opposition parties, including DMK, Trinamool Congress, have expressed concerns over “one nation, one election”. Opposition parties argue the rule could undermine the country’s federal structure, weaken regional parties and concentrate power at the centre. Meanwhile, the ruling party said the one-nation-one-election step will be cost-effective and good for governance, which is the need of the hour.
