Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani and six other co-defendants are accused of bribing Indian government officials approximately $265 million, according to U.S. prosecutors. The payments were reportedly intended to secure lucrative contracts expected to generate $2 billion in profits over 20 years. The purported deal also includes the development of India’s largest solar power plant project.

Adani Group has denied all the accusations, calling them “baseless”. However, Indian government officials have yet to make any comments on the matter.

During a media briefing on Thursday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed the ongoing legal situation surrounding the Adani Group. Jean-Pierre reiterated that the Biden administration was fully aware of the allegations against Adani, but she did not comment further on the specifics of the case.

“We are aware of the allegations and I must ask you to ask the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and the DOJ (Department of Justice) for the specifics of the allegations against the Adani Group,” Jean-Pierre said.

Despite the serious nature of these claims, Jean-Pierre expressed confidence in the stability of the U.S.-India relationship, emphasizing the solid foundation of this bilateral partnership.

“We believe that the relationship between our two countries is built on solid foundations,” she concluded.
