Bagladesh elections: An interim government has ruled Bangladesh since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s government. The leader of this interim government is Muhammad Yunus. Since taking power, the interim government has been demanding that an election date be announced. Now, under mounting pressure, Muhammad Yunus says elections will be held in late 2025 or early 2026.
Yunus talks about reform
Major political parties, including the BNP led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, hope to hold elections in the country as soon as possible, Dhaka Tribune reported. Despite criticism and opposition, Yunus did not announce an election date, only talking about the schedule. Regarding the election date, Yunus said that he has repeatedly called on everyone to hold elections after completing major reforms.
What else did Muhammad Yunus say?
Muhammad Yunus said it might be possible to hold elections by the end of 2025 if political consensus is reached to remove errors from the voter rolls through minor reforms. “If we get the required level of reform in the electoral process and agree to the Electoral Reform Commission’s recommendations, it could take at least another six months,” he said.

This is how elections are done in Bangladesh
At the same time, we are also here to tell you that the electoral process in Bangladesh is similar to the Lok Sabha elections in India. Members of Parliament are elected here in the same manner as in India. This means that the candidate who gets one more vote wins. After the election results are announced, MPs from the largest party or coalition elect their leader, who becomes prime minister. The parliament here has a total of 350 seats. Of these, 50 seats are reserved for women. There are no elections for reserved seats, and general elections are held every five years for a total of 300 seats.
