On the afternoon of 11 August 2024, a terrible landslide occurred in Bhimbali of Kedarnath. An entire mountain slipped and fell into the Mandakini river. The passengers coming and going there made a video of this scene. It is seen in the video how the entire mountain is getting absorbed into the river. The path of the river was blocked due to mountain debris.

A pond was formed towards the upper part of Mandakini river. The good thing was that no one died in this accident. No damage was done. District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar said that on August 11, in the afternoon, a landslide occurred from the hill across the river in front of Bhimbali Helipad. Due to this the water in Mandakini river stopped.

Rajwar told that a pond had been built there. Which is now gradually decreasing. There has been no loss of life or property in any way. He told that an alert has been issued from Gaurikund to Rudraprayag. He has appealed to the people living on the river banks that no one should go towards the river. Be alert.

But isn’t it enough that such accidents are increasing…

In April 2024 itself, ISRO had revealed that there are 2431 glacial lakes in the Himalayas. Out of which the size of 676 lakes has continuously increased. Of these, 130 are in Indian territory. The danger of breaking of these lakes remains. These glacial lakes are in danger due to global warming. Here it is a matter of glacier but such accidents can also happen due to landslides. If a mountain breaks and blocks the path of a river, then one day the river will break it and move ahead. This will cause a terrible accident.

There are a total of 2431 lakes in the Himalayas, their size is continuously increasing.

If we look at the data from 1984 to 2023, we find that there are 2431 lakes in the Himalayas, which are larger than 10 hectares in size. Whereas since 1984 till now, there are 676 lakes whose area has expanded. Of these, 130 are present in India. 65 glacial lakes have been formed on the Indus River, seven on the Ganga and 58 on the Brahmaputra.

How can this kind of accident happen due to landslide?

When a mountain is formed, a large amount of landmass moves from one place to another. Whenever an object reaches a state of higher energy, it moves towards lower energy. So that stability and balance is maintained. The same thing happens in the mountains during landslides. When these mountains will slide and fall into the river, a pond will be formed on one side.

Where a pond is built, there will be more energy. Then the rising water in the pond will try to run towards less energy by increasing the pressure. It is here that the wall of the pond will break and flash flood will occur in the low-lying areas. The frequency of extreme weather events has increased in the last 10-15 years. Because of this the hill slopes are not attaining stability. To get it we slide from top to bottom. Usually it is called landslip.

Landslip happens first, massive landslide occurs

When landslip occurs on a large scale, then it is called landslide. A landslide is considered when 10 square meters of land slides together. That is, such a mountain slope below which there are less strong stones. There is loose soil on top. There are less trees and plants on this soil. When more water falls on it from above. Then it slides.

There can be only two reasons for a landslide. First earthquake and second very heavy rain. Nothing else is changing. If landslides are not happening due to both these natural reasons. So it can’t be from anything else. Because geographical conditions are stable. Humans are spoiling it. By causing climate change and creating haphazard construction.
