Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah was recently unanimously elected as the next chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). With this, 35-year-old Jay Shah became the youngest administrator to hold the top post in world cricket administration. Shah will replace current ICC chairman Greg Barclay on December 1 this year. New Zealand’s Barclay had decided not to contest for the third consecutive time.

Now since Jay Shah will be seen working in the ICC, the question is who can become the secretary of BCCI in his place. There was a possibility that the new secretary would be elected in the 93rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of BCCI. But according to the latest update, now the election of the new secretary of the board is not likely to be held in the AGM. The BCCI AGM is to be held in Bengaluru on 29 October.

The AGM will take place during the inauguration of the state-of-the-art National Cricket Academy (NCA) on the outskirts of the city as all the board members will be present in the city. The NCA has been operating from the M Chinnaswamy Stadium complex since it came into existence more than two decades ago.

The date of SGM may be announced

The new BCCI secretary will not be elected at the AGM, but the date of the Special General Meeting (SGM) for the election can be decided in this meeting. Jay Shah, however, will not leave his role as BCCI secretary in the AGM as he has to take over the charge of ICC chairman from December 1. Another important point in the 18-point agenda of the meeting sent to all the state associations is the appointment of a BCCI representative in ICC meetings as Shah will no longer be available for that role.

Binny’s name will be discussed for this post

The name of current BCCI president Roger Binny may be discussed for the board’s representative in the ICC or this post may be given to the new secretary. But age is not in his favour for 69-year-old Binny as the maximum age to join the administration is 70 years. Apart from these two important matters, two representatives of the general body and one representative of the Indian Cricketers Association (ICA) will be included in the IPL Governing Council in the AGM.

The AGM will also include some regular activities of the board like approval of the annual budget for 2024-25 and appointment of Ombudsman and Conduct Officer. The meeting will appoint the Cricket Committee and Standing Committee as per the BCCI Constitution, as well as constitute a new Umpire Committee under Rule 27. Apart from approving the rules framed by the apex council related to domestic cricket, the AGM will also consider the report of the BCCI’s internal committee constituted under the ‘Sexual Harassment Prevention Policy’.
