Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina Party’s student wing banned, action taken under anti-terrorism law

There have been significant political changes in Bangladesh. The Students League, the student wing of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party, has been banned. The interim government under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus announced the news in a communiqué on Wednesday. The local government has banned the organization under the provisions of the 2009 Anti-Terrorism Law.

According to a notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Bangladesh Students Union was found to be involved in activities that posed a threat to public security. These activities include murder, torture, harassment, reselling of student dormitories, rigged tenders, rape, sexual harassment and other serious criminal activities on university campuses.

Ban on Jamaat-e-Islami lifted, but… Taslima Nasreen

Regarding the interim government’s decision to ban the Awami League student wing, Bangladesh resident Taslima Nasreen said, “Yunus is going crazy. He lifted the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Shibir, but Bangladesh “Student factions in the country” banned Chhatra League, the oldest political party, and lifted the ban on Islamic terrorist organizations such as Hizb ut-Tahrir and Ansarullah Bangladesh.

This ban on student unions was implemented at the request of students leading the “Student Movement Against Discrimination”. The student organization led the movement, organizing a major campaign against the government of Sheikh Hasina and demanding her resignation. Sheikh Hasina eventually had to resign from her post and currently lives in India.

During the movement there were calls to ban student unions

During the movement, demands were also made to ban student leagues. The student organization has issued an ultimatum to the interim government, with a deadline of Thursday. With the decision to ban the Awami League, politics here is likely to change significantly and now traces of the Awami League are being erased. Opponents have long accused the group of engaging in violence.
