In West Bengal’s Malda district, the Panchayat Sabha issued a Taliban order to publicly tie a couple to a lamppost and beat them. After learning about the incident, local people attacked the police when they came to stop them. Angry mob allegedly attacked police station inspector (Apart from vandalizing the IC’s vehicles, bricks were also thrown at the police. Some police officers were injured in the incident.
The incident took place in Sherpur village in Jhalapur Gram Panchayat area under the jurisdiction of Kaliya Chowk police station in Malda district. The incident happened last Tuesday night. The video went viral in the area.
According to police and local sources, a group of villagers saw a couple in a mango orchard and accused them of having an extramarital affair before grabbing them, taking them to the road and beating them severely. Thereafter, as punishment, the loving couple was tied to a telephone pole and allegedly brutally beaten.

Police officers attacked when they went to rescue couple
After receiving the news, the police from Kalyachak police station immediately rushed to Sherpur village of Jalalpur. Excited crowds prevented the loving couple from being rescued. As a result, an altercation began between the crowd and the police. It is said that some villagers suddenly started beating the police. Even IC’s cars were destroyed.
Police were allegedly attacked with sticks and stones. Later, IC Suman Roy Choudhary of Kaliachuk police station led a large police force to the spot, but the angry residents also vandalized the IC’s car. Many police officers were injured with bricks and sticks.
The police retaliated on lathi charges, took control of the situation, rescued the couple and took them to Kalyachak police station. Police arrested three people in the incident.
